December 2007 Weather Highlights
Summary of December 2007 was a Record Breaking month with; below Normal Temperatures and above Normal Rainfall
December 2007 started off where November left off with the continuation of the much promised warm wet storm, that arrived on the last day of November, this storm ended the long dry streak where only 0.11 inches had fallen from August 1st to November 29th. The storm that dumped 1.86 inches on November 30th the wettest November day on record dumped a additional 0.69 inches on Dec 1st bringing the 2 day total for the storm to 2.55 inches further to Northeast of Pepperridge, The Town of Carefree had received a whopping 4 and 1/2 inches from this storm. This was quite a impressive storm!
After a brief a warm up to 74.5°F on Dec 4th the warmest day for the month the rain returned with a series of weather systems that moved through the area for the next 5 days staring on the 7th December bringing welcoming valley rain and much need Mountain Snows. In fact by December 11th 1.69 inches had fallen in December and 3.55 inches of rain had fallen at Pepperridge since Nov 30th bringing the yealy rainfall total to 7.49 inches. This was a welcome relief to the long dry spell.
Below normal temperatures continued in the wake of the last in the series of wet storms that had moved though the area and the low temperature fell to slightly above freezing on the 15th with 33.2°F. The temperatures briefly warm back up to normal on the 18th. This was followed by the first in a series of dry cold and windy storms that prevailed for the rest of the month as daytime temperatures failed to reach 60.0°F from the 22nd to the 29th. The strongest of these cold dry systems occured on the 25th (Christmas) it produce a cold a windy day with the peak gust for the month of 32 mph at 10:20am. This was followed by a clear cold night on the 26th which was the first freeze of the winter season.
Another cold, dry and windy system moved through the state on 27th leading to the second freeze of the winter season on the 27th with 32.2°F. The month ended with a slow warning trend as daytime high climbed baavk above 60.0°F and the contination of cold nights with the night lows hovering just above the freezing mark.
By month's end we had the coldest December on record with a average of 49.6°F beating the old record by just (0.3°F) a degree, the old record was 49.9°F in 2001. If fact the average temperature fell - 16.4°F from November's warm average of 66.0°F!! So the change between the month's was quite drastic with December being a full - 18.1°F degrees cooler than November with a average high of 61.7°F and - 14.4°F cooler for the average low with 39.4°F, which was just +0.5°F off the record low average of 38.9°F degrees in 2001.
Daily Record lows were set on the 26th and 27th of the month and the month finish with above normal rainfall. There was 5 days with rainfall and a total for the month of 1.69 inches the second wettest on record behind 2004's 2.30 inches. Despite the wet weather of late November early December the year finished with 7.49 inches the third driest on record at Pepper Ridge
